For my first attempt at bird carving I decided to take a class that began in January and ran one evening a week for about 12 weeks. The black capped chickadee being the subject, this one was carved from tupelo wood and used a variety of tools but primarily a power carver (WeCheer brand) and a broad assortment of carbide, diamond and ceramic burrs. Detailing on the feathers was burned using a Detail Master's Excalibur burning unit. Legs and feet are made from copper wire soldered together, which was in itself a tremendous test of patience. But I made it through! And this is just the first of (I hope) many more to come.
